Exeter College Masterplan Consultation

Masterplan phase 1: Institute of Technology

Exeter has a strong and growing reputation as a leading centre for technical and digital innovation and growth.

Working with the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth, other colleges from across the South West, and leading organisations such as the Met Office and Oxygen House, Exeter College is helping to bring forward a new South West Institute of Technology.

This prestigious project for the college, and for the region, is one of only 16 proposed across the country. It is supported by central government through its plan to deliver Institutes of Technology throughout the UK: high-quality employer-led institutions specialising in providing higher-level technical skills for employers.

Catering for up to 1,549 students, ranging from post A-level to degree apprenticeship level, the institute would help put the region at the forefront of digital technology learning across the UK and underwrite Exeter’s leading role in the nation’s digital future.

The Exeter facilities would be housed in a new building on the college’s Hele Road site, and this is shown as ‘IoT’ on the plans on show here.

The IoT building will be the first phase of the Masterplan to be delivered and also form part of a separate concurrent detailed application to align with funding timescales set by central government. Alongside enhancing the digital and data driven curriculum of the college, this building will provide the college with a dynamic new entrance and frontage to signify the enchantments to follow across the campus.

The project will extend the existing Hele Building, and the arrivals court to the front of the scheme will be opened up to enhance the approach to the college’s new entrance, and establish new patterns of movement around the north and south
